More Than Six Years !
In 1935 some young Jesuits, students of theology, took the initiative of gathering a vast amount of
documentation from around the world on catechesis. They opened a "Catechetical Document Centre" and
organized travelling expositions and published an evaluation of the assembled works. A few years later
in 1946, the centre was renamed as the "International Centre for Studies in Religious Education:
LUMEN VITAE."
Over the course of the years, Lumen Vitae has been enriched with new accretions and today constitutes a
complex centre of national and international fame. It devotes itself to research, publication, and
teaching in the areas of pastoral theology and catechesis.
The core group of Lumen Vitae consists of 25 people (professors and administrative personnel) about ten
of whom are jesuits. To this basic team are added forty or so adjunct teachers from outside. In
addition, each year some professons are invited to come from Africa, Latin America, or Asia.
